Best Men's Coaches for Depression

Men's depression rarely looks like the clinical picture — the sadness, the tearfulness, the expressed hopelessness. It looks like irritability. Overwork. Emotional flatness. Contempt. The persistent sense that something is wrong that you can't name and wouldn't say out loud even if you could. Terry Real called this covert depression in 1997, and most of the coaches who understand it work in the men's work tradition he helped define.

Clinical care and coaching together

If you are in significant depression — persistent low mood, functional impairment, thoughts of self-harm — a licensed therapist or psychiatrist is the right starting point. Men's work coaching does not substitute for clinical treatment of clinical conditions.

For men who are functional but running the patterns of covert depression — the numbness, the anger, the emotional unavailability, the life that has lost its meaning — men's work coaching addresses the territory directly.

Terry Real's clinical framework, available through Relational Life Institute practitioners, is the most sophisticated clinical approach to male depression available. His book I Don't Want to Talk About It (1997) remains the foundational text on how men carry depression differently from women and what actually addresses it.

What men's work offers that therapy sometimes doesn't

Therapy for male depression often focuses on cognitive patterns and clinical symptoms. What it less often addresses is the structural situation that produces the depression: the absence of genuine male community, the lack of meaning and purpose beyond work and family obligation, the emotional suppression that has been running so long the man doesn't remember not doing it.

Men's groups offer the community dimension. Rites of passage programs offer the meaning dimension. Connor Beaton's ManTalks programs work with purpose and pattern at depth. These are not substitutes for clinical care — they address dimensions that clinical care often doesn't reach.

Common Questions

How do I know if I'm covertly depressed?

Some starting questions: Do you feel chronically flat, even when things are objectively fine? Do small things trigger disproportionate anger? Have you noticed you drink, work, or exercise more as a way of staying ahead of something? Do you feel empty in relationships that should feel meaningful? These are starting points for an honest conversation.

Should I try medication or coaching first?

Medication and coaching address different things and can run concurrently. If depression is significantly impairing your function, psychiatric evaluation is worth pursuing alongside any coaching you start.
