Clinical treatment comes first
For active addiction — particularly physical dependency on alcohol, opioids, or other substances — medical detox and clinical treatment come before any coaching. This is not negotiable. Men's work coaching is not a crisis service and is not equipped for medical stabilization. Get clinical care first.
For behavioral addictions (pornography, work, gambling, compulsive sex) and for men in sustained recovery who are ready to examine what drove the addiction, men's work coaching is appropriate and often transformative.
Who addresses addiction in men's work
Gabor Maté's Compassionate Inquiry approach was developed specifically through his work with severely addicted men and women in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. His In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts (2010) is the most rigorous and humane examination of addiction available in plain language. Practitioners trained in Compassionate Inquiry are equipped to work with the emotional roots of addictive behavior — the shame, the disconnection, the early wounds that made the using feel necessary.
Connor Beaton at ManTalks has worked with addiction specifically and frames it in Men's Work as a primary form of male self-sabotage. His programs address addiction not just as behavior but as a signal: something is being managed that needs to be faced.
The combination of 12-step community (for behavioral accountability and peer support) and men's work coaching (for the underlying emotional and trauma work) is often more effective than either alone.
Common Questions
I'm in AA and it's working. Should I also do men's work?
Many men find the two complement each other. AA provides community, accountability, and a behavioral framework. Men's work addresses what the using was managing. They serve different dimensions and there's no reason to choose between them.
What about addiction to pornography or work — not substances?
The mechanism is the same. Behavioral addictions follow the same pattern: a behavior that provides temporary relief from an intolerable emotional state, used repeatedly until compulsive. Maté's framework applies to all of them.
